monsal dale, peak district, uk
Monsal Dale sits in the White Peak limestone area of the Peak District National Park.
The Headstone Viaduct at Monsal Dale was built by the Midland Railway over the River Wye in 1863, and stands 70 feet (21 m) high at the centre.
With Grade II listed status being assigned to the viaduct in 1970, it is now part of the Monsal Trail.
Headstone Tunnel, at the southern end of the viaduct, was re-opened to the public in May 2011, along with the nearby Cressbrook and Litton Tunnels; and the Monsal Trail is now hugely popular with walkers and cyclists.
